Truck drive shafts: Perfect power transmission for maximum performance

Drive shafts are essential for driving heavy commercial vehicles such as trucks or buses. This is because they reliably ensure efficient torque transmission and enable the drive system to deliver maximum performance even under demanding conditions. The complex drive components ensure stable power transmission at all times, even under demanding requirements, which is particularly important for vehicles with special bodies/special vehicles. But how exactly does such a (truck) drive shaft work? And what role do drive shafts play in vehicle construction? In the following, you will learn everything you need to know about truck drive shafts.

The key role of (truck) drive shafts in vehicle construction

Cardan shafts ensure power transmission in commercial vehicles, even under demanding conditions such as changing driving conditions or high loads. Depending on the design, drive shafts enable both low-loss torque transmission and the necessary movement compensation between the drive components. When driving on uneven roads with heavy loads or special vehicle superstructures, drive shafts reliably compensate for changes in angle and the associated changes in length, thus ensuring safe and efficient operation. This is particularly important for trucks used in logistics, on construction sites or in heavy goods traffic.

For a drive shaft to perform its task reliably, it must fulfill various requirements:

  • Reliable power transmission: Drive shafts ensure that the drive power is transmitted directly. They are made from resistant materials so that they remain durable even under high loads.
  • Minimizing power losses: The flexible design of the drive shafts, the use of highly efficient bearings and friction-reducing coatings make it easy to compensate for deviations between the drive components. This minimizes unnecessary loads and helps to maintain the efficiency of the entire drivetrain.
  • Adaptation to special requirements: Depending on the design, drive shafts are optimized to varying degrees for specific applications. While some variants have been specially developed to compensate for extra-large angular misalignments, others are designed to transmit torque as evenly as possible. Especially for vehicles with special superstructures, such as tippers or swap systems, a precisely matched drive shaft is crucial.

The Elbe Group provides you with high-quality drive shafts, which we can customize to the requirements of your vehicle on request – for optimum performance and a long service life.

Types and areas of application

Not all cardan shafts are the same: different types are used depending on the requirements and area of application.

Technical types of cardan shafts

Cardan shafts are available in various designs, including universal joint shafts and double cardan shafts, each of which is designed for different areas of application:

  • Cardan shafts: Typically equipped with a connecting tube and integrated length compensation, these connect the transmission with the differential and ensure reliable power transmission along the drive axle.
  • Double universal joint shafts: Are used in all driven steering axles in multi-axle vehicles or in off-road trucks. Thanks to their special design with two joints positioned directly behind each other, they enable large deflection angles (steering angles) and uniform torque transmission in the tightest of spaces.

Cardan shafts are used in almost all classic drive systems, while double universal joint shafts are the ideal solution for driven steering axles for any type of vehicle with complex axle arrangements.

Cardan shafts according to application

In addition to the technical designs, drive shafts also differ in terms of their intended use and load profile. Which drive shaft is the right choice always depends on the vehicle and its operating environment:

  • Standard drive shafts are used in conventional vehicles and are considered to be particularly robust and durable.
  • High-performance universal joint shafts were developed for extreme operating conditions and high loads. They are therefore primarily used off the road on construction sites and in agriculture and forestry.
  • Special designs: Customized drive shafts are also available for special requirements.

In the following, you will learn more about the structure of a truck drive shaft. In addition to the individual components, it explains how they interact and which mechanical principles determine the function of a drive shaft.

Design and function of truck drive shafts

The universal joints are at the heart of every truck drive shaft, as they determine the service life and are the only way to ensure a flexible connection while driving. The position of the universal joints (distance to the input or output) varies depending on the design and size.

1. all good things come in threes: the cardan shaft

In addition to the universal joints already mentioned, a cardan drive shaft also has other components: The flanges, actually fork flanges or flange drivers, connect the cardan shaft to the other components of the drive system and either comply with common standards or are individually designed to meet the respective requirements. A length compensation (and / or a tube) ensures the necessary stability and torque transmission.

2. Better safe than sorry: the double universal joint shaft

A double universal joint shaft has two universal joints positioned one behind the other, allowing it to compensate for larger angular misalignments. It is mainly used in vehicles with driven steering axles, as it achieves large angles in the smallest of spaces and, when installed correctly, enables relatively uniform torque transmission. As on the differential side, the connection on the wheel side (planetary drive) is made via a positive-locking profile connection. There are different requirements for the gearing. While a simple spline is used as a connection in the differential, the requirements on the wheel side are often higher, as a spline often has to be applied directly to the short fork shaft (sun gear shaft).

How a truck drive shaft works in detail

The cardanic principle enables the transmission of torques via universal joints, which create a flexible connection between the input and output, even if they are not aligned. The cardan shaft ensures that angular misalignments are compensated and a constant power transmission is achieved.

Cardan shafts compensate for these deviations between the transmission and the driven axle, while double cardan shafts are almost always used in driven steering axles of multi-axle vehicles. While driving, the angles between the drive components are constantly changing, whether due to bumps in the road or steering movements of the axles. The universal joints compensate for these movements and ensure that the torque is transmitted reliably even under changing conditions.

Good to know: “In alignment” means that two components are aligned exactly straight and without angular deviation on a common axis.

Maintaining drive shafts on trucks: maintenance tips

Regular maintenance of the drive shafts is essential to ensure the longevity and efficiency of the entire drive system. Signs of wear can occur on the drive shaft, especially in vehicles that are used under high loads. A timely inspection helps to prevent major damage and ensure the safe operation of the vehicle.

If signs are recognized at an early stage, professional maintenance can make major repairs unnecessary and at the same time increase operational safety. Timely replacement of the drive shaft with an original drive shaft at an authorized specialist dealer ensures smooth operation of the truck.
