Drive shafts for excavators and construction machinery – maximum power transmission in heavy-duty applications
Whether mobile excavators, wheel loaders, or mobile cranes – construction machinery must be able to reliably deliver its full performance spectrum. Elbe drive shafts transmit torque safely, compensate for changes in angle and length, and are designed for tough construction site operation. Since 1919, the Elbe Group has been developing drive components in certified processes (ISO 9001, IATF 16949) and supplying OEMs worldwide. We support precise design with service life calculations and optional EST sensor technology for condition monitoring. This results in a robust, economical solution tailored to your application profile. The results are incorporated into the design and into plannable maintenance concepts – for maximum availability.
Requirements & areas of application – wheel loader, mobile crane, and excavator drive shafts in comparison
The requirements in terms of torque, deflection angle, and environmental conditions vary in each area of application. The right drive shaft ensures performance and service life.
- Wheel loader drive shaft: Cyclical load peaks, high exposure to dirt, changing directions of travel at relatively low speeds
- Mobile crane drive shaft: large angle changes in off-road use with high torques and higher speeds when driving on normal roads
- Excavator drive shaft: high torques when working with the dozer blade and high speeds when driving to the construction site
Thanks to service life calculations, we simulate real load profiles and recommend the optimal series. This minimizes oversizing and costs. Ultimately, the more precise the load data and application profiles, the more accurate the selection.
Types & options of modern construction machine cardan shafts
The right design depends on the installation situation, the axle geometry, and the driving profile of the vehicle. The following variants are common:
- Cardan shafts with two universal joints are the standard in vehicle construction. They compensate for angular deviations resulting from vertical and/or horizontal misalignments, provided that both individual angles are approximately equal.
- Special wide-angle shafts have joints with an extended swivel range and are used for highly mobile superstructures or changing bend angles in the drive train.
- Cardan shafts with wing-style connections are widely used in all types of construction machinery. These have a compact design and can be quickly and easily replaced in the field..
In addition to the classic cardan shaft, there are also designs with two directly successive universal joints – so-called double joint shafts or centered joint.
Overview of example series
| Series | Torque (kN·m) | Max. angle | Flange | Application |
| 0.100 Cardan | 0,25–35 | 35° | DIN/SAE/cross-toothed | Mobile excavator |
| 0.300 Centered | 4–15,2 | 46° | DIN/cross-toothed | Wheel loader |
| 0.500 Double joint | 2,8-16,9 | 47° | DIN | Tunnel drill |
| 0.900 Wing‑Style | 5,5-26,7 | 25° | – | Mining dump trucks |
We manufacture customized flange connections or sensor mounts in short-term prototype production according to customer specifications.
Design & function – how a drive shaft works under high loads
A drive shaft transmits torque from the engine to the transmission and onward—via a transfer case, if necessary—to the axle, while compensating for angular misalignment. At its heart is the universal joint: four roller bearing bushings oscillate on hardened cross pins, enabling the necessary movements without significant transmission losses. Universal joints and length compensation compensate for the movements that occur in the drive train during driving. Heat-treated steels and suitable cardan tubes cope with dynamic loads even under extreme conditions . The optional EST sensor technology records torque, speed, ambient temperatures, and angles in real time and reports limit violations to your condition monitoring system via CAN bus.
Materials expertise & precision manufacturing – quality from a single source
Elbe relies on proven heat-treated steels, modern manufacturing processes, and comprehensive quality controls. Incoming goods inspections and series tests on test benches ensure consistent, stable quality standards.
Sustainability & Environmental Balance – Conserving Resources, Securing the Future
Closed cooling circuits save thousands of cubic meters of water every year. Each drive shaft combines top performance with a measurably smaller carbon footprint. Our German locations have been certified according to DIN ISO 14001 (environmental management) and DIN ISO 50001 (energy management) for many years.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about excavator and construction machine drive shafts
Below, we answer frequently asked questions about selection, use, and maintenance.
Which drive shaft is suitable for confined spaces?
For tight installation spaces, Elbe offers so-called short versions, which offer high performance despite their compact design. Original Elbe cardan shafts in wing-style design are particularly suitable for construction machinery due to their compact design.
Are there drive shafts for particularly high loads?
Robust series with reinforced components are used for applications with high load cycles. Correct dimensioning according to the actual load collective and the required interfaces is crucial.
What are the advantages of the EST drive shaft?
The EST drive shaft records speed, torque, and deflection angle in real time. This supports condition-based maintenance, prevents breakdowns, and facilitates fleet monitoring.
Can spare parts be obtained worldwide?
A global network of sales partners enables fast spare parts delivery. Availability and delivery time depend on the location and the specific component.
